What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a progressive eye condition that can cause permanent vision loss if left untreated. The most common type of glaucoma occurs due to raised interocular pressure. This raised pressure damages your optic nerve. Over 70 million people suffer from glaucoma, including an estimated 3 million people in America.

In the US, it is mostly people over the age of 60 that get glaucoma. But, it can occur at any age, even in babies. If you have a family history of glaucoma, you are more likely to get it. Other health issues, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, can increase your chances of getting glaucoma.

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?

Glaucoma often has no signs, making it often referred to as the "silent thief of sight." Possible symptoms include blurry vision, eye and head pain, loss of peripheral vision, nausea, and difficulty seeing at night.

How is it diagnosed?

Our optometrist can do several tests to determine if you have glaucoma, including tonometry and a visual field test.

Is there a cure for glaucoma?

No, there is currently no cure for glaucoma, but once it has been diagnosed, there are treatments that can slow its progression.

How is glaucoma treated?

Many things can be used to treat glaucoma, including eye drops, oral medication, and laser treatments. Your eye doctor may also suggest lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet, regularly exercising, and limiting your caffeine intake.
